Avast Free AntiVirus 2015
After reviewing the latest reviews in the IT press and evaluating the results myself, I’d recommend Avast Free AntiVirus 2015 as the best compromise between efficient use of resources and the level of protection provided for Internet security and AntiVirus protection.
To quote PC Pro magazine’s latest review:
Avast Free Antivirus was our pick of the free packages last year and this year we see little reason to change our minds. With a wealth of useful features – including strong anti-malware protection – it keeps your PC secure, and its relaxed approach to flogging premium features and skill at identifying legitimate software make it easy to live with. If you don’t want to pay for security software, it’s the best, most balanced proposition.
Avast themselves say:
Why choose Avast Free Antivirus
- We protect more than 230 million people all around the world. Including your friends, of course!
- We’ve been in the industry for over a quarter century, and our experience corresponds to that.
- Certified and often awarded by all major IT security testing labs
- We provide more features than leading paid-for antivirus products – and we do it for FREE

Like a lot of free software downloads, make sure that you are downloading from the author’s own site, by using the link above, and also check the install screens for tick boxes that ask whether you want to install “free offers” – such as Google Toolbar, Chrome etc. In this case you will need to un-tick the boxes if you don’t want the extras. See here for further advice.
It is best to completely uninstall other Internet security products first and to also disable built-in Windows security such as Windows Defender afterwards – see this link:
To open Windows Defender
-
Open Windows Defender by clicking the Start button . In the search box, type Defender, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Defender.
-
Click Tools, and then click Options.
-
Click Administrator, select or clear the Use this program check box, and then click Save. If you’re prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
